Discover a Premier Private School in Indianapolis

The Orchard School is a nonsectarian, independent day school in Indianapolis that provides private preschool through eighth grade. Our small class sizes and low student-to-teacher ratio give teachers the space to build meaningful relationships, creating a true community of belonging. Students love Orchard because their individuality is honored and the academics are challenging yet fun, fostering a love of learning guided by teachers who know them well. All of this takes place in a warm, nurturing community where a community of belonging is evident, and recognized.

For more than 100 years, Orchard has been the leader in progressive education in central Indiana. Utilizing our 43-acre wooded campus, our nationally recognized programs are designed to further our mission: to develop and educate the whole child.

Elementary School (grades 1-4)

The elementary school curriculum is organized into interdisciplinary units that enhance the children’s ability to connect school life and real life. This allows students to explore areas of study by using multiple learning approaches across academic disciplines. Children learn to express themselves through these modes of communication. Students are encouraged to move toward academic and personal independence and are provided the framework to develop mastery.

Middle School (grades 5-8)

Teachers differentiate instruction through varied content, delivery methods, and options for students to represent learning. With a small student to teacher ratio, faculty build meaningful relationships that foster confidence, independence, and a culture of presence in our cell phone free environment. Highly trained teachers, most with advanced degrees, often co-teach integrated units such as an archeological dig or water study. Orchard graduates move on to high school and beyond demonstrating ethical character, academic excellence, and service to others, fulfilling the expectations of the Orchard diploma.

Early Childhood (Preschool, Pre-Kindergarten, and Kindergarten)

The Orchard School’s nationally recognized Early Childhood program serves Preschool (ages 3–4), Pre-Kindergarten (ages 4–5), and Kindergarten. Each classroom is led by two highly qualified teachers and supported by a team of specialists. Early Childhood students participate in an Integrated Learning program that emphasizes science and nature-based exploration, as well as dedicated Wellness and Music programs. Kindergarteners also take part in additional specials, including PE, Spanish, Art, and Creative Movement. Our programs use the school’s 43-acre wooded campus as both an outdoor classroom and a space for unstructured play throughout the year. This intentional nature-based approach supports the curricular goals and social-emotional growth we hold for all of our students.
